Local Energy Efficiency Partnership / Technology Adoption Pilot (LEEP / TAP)

What is LEEP?

For the building industry to adopt energy efficient and renewable energy practices and technologies there needs to be broad use of mechanisms that support innovation. LEEP™ is one such mechanism. Launched as a pilot in London, Ontario in 2006, LEEP brought together local builders to work together to review a wide range of emerging energy-related technologies and determine which ones were of most interest to the them. The pilot was well received by builders, the London Home Builders’ Association (LHBA) and the City of London. Participating builders found the materials on the various technologies useful and a number of them tried some of the innovative technologies they learned about through LEEP. However, it was the process of working together to direct the inquiry into these technologies that proved to be the most useful to them.

In 2008, EnerQuality was approached by Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY to replicate, streamline and extend the LEEP process through other regional Home Builder Associations (HBAs). With the support of the Ontario Power Authority, Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas, EnerQuality created the Technology Adoption Pilot (TAP) to demonstrate technologies identified through LEEP in participating builders’ discovery houses. TAP will extend the gains from the HBA engagement by identifying and working with individual builders who are able and interested in piloting these technologies in their building practices. By seeking to connect the technology identification process to marketplace adoption, LEEP and TAP are seeking to create a model of technology adoption that will accelerate the implementation of emerging technologies across Canada.
